Flughafen Bremen is grappling with a structural annual deficit of about 10 million to 13.1 million euros, with internal warnings that insolvency could become a risk as early as 2027. The city-owned airport has already cut costs by roughly 4 million to 4.1 million euros under its Brestart savings programme, but the measures have not closed the funding gap.
Rising operating costs and weaker demand have kept pressure on the airport’s finances, leaving Bremen with a long-running shortfall in the low double-digit millions. Regional reporting indicates that insolvency in self-administration is no longer an abstract scenario, although an immediate collapse is not seen as imminent.
The airport, fully owned by the city of Bremen, remains a key regional transport link and its finances have become part of a wider debate over the viability of medium-sized German airports in a period of cost inflation and softer passenger traffic. Aufsichtsratschef Kai Stührenberg has been among the figures associated with the discussions around the airport’s financial outlook.
