Construction crew cuts cable, triggering FAA outage and Northeast flight chaos

A communications failure at the FAA’s Philadelphia TRACON forced the agency to restrict traffic across the U.S. Northeast on Monday after a primary circuit failed and the backup fibre line was also cut during construction work in New Jersey. The disruption hit Philadelphia, Newark, JFK, LaGuardia and Teterboro, causing hundreds of cancellations and delays across one of the busiest air corridors in the United States.

Traffic flow at the Philadelphia-area approach control facility was reduced as controllers lost both communications paths, quickly overwhelming capacity across the region. Flights were stopped or held at several airports, while international services also suffered knock-on effects, including a Lufthansa flight diverted to Boston.

By late Monday, officials said the telecom lines had been repaired and operations were resuming, although delays were still expected to ripple through the network. The incident exposed how a single telecom failure can cascade through a major TRACON and disrupt airline schedules across multiple airports in minutes.
