Power bank fire diverts IndiGo Airbus A321neo to Hyderabad

IndiGo flight 6E 6115 from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday after smoke emerged from a passenger’s personal electronic device, reportedly a power bank. The Airbus A321neo, registered VT-NOE, landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport after cabin crew brought the situation under control. IndiGo arranged an alternative aircraft to carry passengers onwards to Chennai, with no injuries reported.

The device was reportedly stored in an overhead bin and caught fire during the flight. Cabin crew used firefighting equipment to contain the incident, while the pilots diverted the aircraft under established safety procedures. The flight departed Delhi at about 13:30 local time and had been scheduled to reach Chennai at approximately 16:00.

IndiGo’s account identifies the source only as a customer’s personal electronic device; media reports have described it as a power bank. The device’s make, the precise mechanism of the fire and whether it was being charged have not been confirmed. No aircraft damage or formal investigation findings have been reported.

The incident highlights the risks posed by lithium-battery fires, which can generate intense heat and smoke and may reignite. Power banks and spare batteries should be carried in cabin baggage, where crew can access them, rather than in checked luggage.
