An Italian Army CH-47 Chinook crashed during routine training in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Brčko District on 29 October, killing four people and injuring 11. The aircraft was operating with the Italian contingent of the EUFOR Althea mission. All 15 people on board were Italian: two members of the Italian Army and two of the Italian Red Cross Military Volunteer Corps died. None of the injured was reported to be in life-threatening condition.
The crash occurred in the Gorice area, about 180 kilometres from Sarajevo. The injured were receiving medical treatment. Italy’s Defence Ministry and EUFOR have opened separate investigations; the cause has not been established.
EUFOR Althea is the EU military operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina responsible for overseeing implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement. EUFOR confirmed that the Chinook was conducting routine training when it crashed. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
