Austro Control deploys Frequentis GuardX recording system

Frequentis has completed the deployment of its GuardX air traffic communications recording system across Austro Control’s Austrian network, covering six airport control towers and the Vienna Area Control Centre. The system records radio, telephone and ambient audio, with local capture at each site and centralised management. It supports access to communications for incident analysis, investigations and compliance; AI-based speech-to-text transcription is a planned capability, not yet confirmed as operational.

The installation covers Vienna (Schwechat), Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt and Salzburg. GuardX is designed to support future combined recording and replay of voice, radar data and controller screens, although no activation date was specified for those functions.

Frequentis Executive Vice President ATM Civil Reinhard Grimm said the platform was prepared for automatic transcription using AI-based components, which he expects to reduce the time and cost of reporting and analysis. The announcement did not disclose the contract value or procurement timeline. Austria’s Vienna Flight Information Region handles around 4,000 flight movements a day, according to Frequentis.
