A Wizz Air Airbus A321 flying from London Luton to Sofia diverted to Budapest on 2 November after a bomb threat was received in flight. A Hungarian Air Force Gripen escorted the aircraft to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, where it landed safely at about 12:09 local time. Authorities inspected the aircraft and passengers; the airline later reported that checks found no threat and that the flight was preparing to continue to Sofia.
The aircraft was over Bosnia and Herzegovina when it turned towards Hungary, according to flight-tracking data cited in media reports. Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said an air-defence readiness alert prompted a Gripen to take off within minutes. The fighter returned to its base at Kecskemét after escorting the passenger aircraft, and police took charge of the incident.
Wizz Air said the diversion and landing followed security protocols. After landing, the A321 was moved to a designated stand for checks on the aircraft and passengers. Hungarian authorities also introduced additional security measures at the airport. No further details about the threat or its origin were reported.
