Lufthansa’s last active A340-600s leave Germany

Lufthansa’s last four active Airbus A340-600s have left Germany, after the final aircraft, D-AIHZ, departed Düsseldorf for Teruel, Spain, on 2 November. The flight completed the transfer of the aircraft from the airline’s fleet to the Spanish site, where Lufthansa A340-600s have previously been dismantled. The move follows the type’s final scheduled Lufthansa services on 18 and 19 October and ends its operation in Lufthansa colours.

D-AIHZ, a 17-year-old aircraft, flew as LH9910, taking off at 11:30 local time and landing in Teruel about two hours later. The departure was marked by a water salute. Before the transfer, all four aircraft were flown from their Frankfurt base to Düsseldorf, where technicians removed components for potential reuse as spare parts.

The other three aircraft left Düsseldorf on 26, 28 and 30 October. Their precise fate in Teruel has not been confirmed. The departure of Lufthansa’s final active aircraft should not be confused with the end of all A340-600s on the German register: German charter and wet-lease operator Universal Sky Carrier still operates three, including two former Lufthansa aircraft.
