Singapore Airlines has signed a three-year agreement to purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of next-generation sustainable aviation fuel from Aether Beacon. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028, with the fuel produced at Project Beacon, Aether Fuels’ commercial facility under development on Pulau Bukom in Singapore for use in the airline’s aircraft operations.
Project Beacon will convert waste-carbon feedstocks, including biomethane and industrial waste gases, into aviation fuel. The pathway is intended to reduce reliance on the oils and fats used in the more established HEFA process, whose feedstocks are subject to tighter supply constraints.
SIA is the first airline to commit to fuel from Project Beacon, and the agreement is its first purchase of SAF produced using Aether’s technology. Aether has claimed that the process can reduce lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions by more than 70% compared with conventional jet fuel.
The planned facility is designed to produce up to 2,000 tonnes of fuel annually, with commercial operations targeted for 2028. Aether is also planning a larger plant by 2031 with capacity at least ten times greater. SIA and Scoot are targeting SAF for 5% of their combined fuel requirements by 2030, subject to global availability and adoption.
