Icelandair Faces Indefinite Strike Threat From Aircraft Mechanics

Icelandair faces an indefinite strike by its aircraft mechanics from 00:01 on 23 September unless a new collective agreement is reached beforehand. The action by the Icelandic Aircraft Mechanics Association would target the airline’s maintenance workforce in Iceland and could disrupt flight operations and schedules during a busy travel period.

The dispute has been unresolved for more than a year, with talks failing to produce a settlement. Icelandair has warned that a walkout could quickly affect its flying programme and that the financial impact cannot yet be estimated. September is one of the carrier’s heaviest months, with roughly 110 scheduled flights and 15,000 passengers a day.

The strike move follows a ballot among the mechanics after prolonged negotiations under the state mediator. The open-ended action increases the risk of cancellations or wider operational disruption at a carrier that plays a central role in Iceland’s air links.
