Icelandair faces indefinite strike threat from aircraft mechanics

Icelandair faces the prospect of an indefinite strike by its aircraft mechanics from 00:01 on 23 September if no agreement is reached beforehand. The action covers the airline’s maintenance staff and could disrupt flight operations during one of its busiest travel periods, with September traffic running at about 110 flights and 15,000 passengers a day.

The Icelandic Aircraft Mechanics’ Association backed the walkout with 88.3% support on 92% turnout. Icelandair is assessing the potential operational impact and plans to contact affected passengers if schedules change.

The dispute has been unresolved for more than a year, with negotiations over a new collective agreement still deadlocked. Icelandair has warned that any disruption would affect not only its own network but also tourism, exporters and the wider Icelandic economy, given the carrier’s role as a key air link for the country. The financial impact remains unclear because the strike has not yet started.
