German winter capacity forecast remains at 84% of pre-crisis level

Airlines plan to offer 108.4 million seats on flights to, from and within Germany from November 2026 to April 2027, leaving capacity unchanged from the same period a year earlier and at 84% of its 2018/19 level. The forecast, attributed to the German Aviation Association (BDL), contrasts with a 3% increase across Europe, where capacity is expected to reach 109% of the pre-crisis benchmark.

European point-to-point airlines outside Germany are forecast to operate at 141% of their pre-crisis capacity. In Germany, their planned capacity stands at 76% of the benchmark. BDL points to high kerosene prices and state-imposed location costs as factors behind the weaker German outlook.

The forecast uses a different period and scope from BDL’s August outlook, which put winter capacity for flights from Germany at 88% of the pre-crisis level. The available reporting does not explain the difference between the two figures.
