Aena plans R$1 billion in private investment at Rio Galeão

Aena plans to coordinate approximately R$1 billion in private investment at Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport over the next three years, following its takeover of the facility. The programme includes an international-brand hotel, a BYD vehicle-testing centre, a Gol aircraft-maintenance hangar and expanded logistics capacity, while the operator also targets improved passenger facilities and broader domestic and international connectivity.

The hotel, to be operated by bUP, will initially have 232 rooms and could expand to 426, with an estimated investment of R$90 million. BYD will develop a testing centre on about 184,000 square metres, involving roughly R$300 million. Gol plans a 56,000-square-metre maintenance hangar at a cost of about R$100 million.

Hire Capital will invest approximately R$430 million in a 120,000-square-metre logistics warehouse. An existing facility will be expanded from 22,000 to 40,000 square metres through a further R$54 million investment. Aena estimates that the projects could create about 3,860 jobs over three years.

Passenger-facing works will cover bathrooms, lighting, elevators, baggage systems, air-conditioning and passenger flows. Aena also plans to support additional frequencies and routes. It assumed control of Galeão on 6 October after winning the re-concession auction with a R$2.9 billion bid; the concession runs until 2039. The investment total mainly represents projects financed by private partners rather than Aena’s direct capital expenditure. Galeão is now part of Aena’s Brazilian network of 18 airports, which handles more than 63 million passengers annually.
