Ukraine reports damage to six Russian Su-34M aircraft at Borisoglebsk

Ukraine has reported that a Neptune missile strike damaged six Russian Su-34M fighter-bombers at the Borisoglebsk military airfield in the Voronezh region during the night of 14-15 October. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed damage of varying degrees to all six aircraft, while satellite imagery reviewed by Reuters showed destruction at the airfield. The base is more than 340 kilometres from Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The Ukrainian Navy attributed the attack to the ground-launched Neptune coastal missile system. It also reported damage to equipment supporting flight operations, followed by secondary explosions and a fire at the airfield. The Navy described all six aircraft as destroyed, but the General Staff’s assessment only confirmed damage, and the full extent of the losses remains independently unverified.

The Su-34M is a modernised Russian fighter-bomber frequently used to deliver glide bombs against Ukrainian positions and settlements near the front line. The loss or prolonged grounding of several aircraft could reduce Russia’s tactical air-support capacity in affected sectors, although the operational impact will depend on the severity of the damage and the availability of replacement aircraft.
