Australia declares MQ-4C Triton in operational service for long-range surveillance

Australia’s Department of Defence has declared the Royal Australian Air Force’s MQ-4C Triton uncrewed aircraft at Initial Operational Capability, giving the service a stronger long-range surveillance capacity across the country’s primary area of military interest. The high-altitude maritime surveillance platform operates from RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory and is flown by No. 9 Squadron from RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia.

The Triton forms part of a wider mix of crewed and uncrewed aircraft intended to deliver persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, maritime patrol and electronic warfare effects. The milestone aligns with the 2026 National Defence Strategy and extends coverage over Australia’s northern approaches and wider Indo-Pacific sea lanes. Australia now has three Tritons in service, with a fourth expected in 2028.
