Lugano Airport wins 30-year operating concession to 2056

Switzerland’s federal transport authorities have renewed the operating concession for Lugano Airport for 30 years, extending the permit to 15 September 2056. The decision gives the airport in Ticino a stable legal framework to keep operating under federal conditions while the City of Lugano weighs urgent infrastructure work and the airport’s future business model.

The renewal followed a review of operational safety and airport management, including a general audit by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation in July 2026. Federal officials have not used the concession decision to settle the long-term management structure or to guarantee route development, limiting it to confirmation that the airport may continue operations. That leaves local authorities to decide on near-term investment priorities and how Lugano Airport should be run over the coming decades.

The concession applies to the airport at Lugano-Agno, where federal, cantonal and municipal interests have long shaped planning decisions. Industry observers see the new horizon as important for infrastructure planning and management choices, but the legal renewal itself does not resolve the commercial direction of the airport.
