Around 40 flights a day cancelled at Charleroi as night strikes continue

Brussels South Charleroi Airport cancelled about 40 flights on Wednesday as overnight strikes by air traffic controllers continued to disrupt operations at the Belgian low-cost hub. The stoppages, which run from 22:00 to 08:00 each night until 10 October, have hit Ryanair most heavily because the carrier accounts for much of the airport’s short-haul schedule.

The industrial action began on Tuesday and has already forced a rolling series of cancellations, with around 44 flights affected on the opening night. Skeyes, Belgium’s air navigation service provider, is trying to keep daytime traffic moving, but the night shutdown leaves airlines limited scope to recover aircraft rotations and crew plans.

The dispute centres on night-work arrangements and allowances, with unions seeking pay levels closer to those at Liège Airport. Skeyes has warned that roughly 832 flight movements could be affected over the full strike period, raising the risk of repeated disruption for passengers travelling on late-evening and early-morning services.
