German Navy Eyes Joint Strike Missile for P-8A Poseidon

Germany’s Navy is examining the Norwegian Joint Strike Missile for its P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, with the weapon seen as a potential strike option for the fleet based at Marinefliegergeschwader 3 “Graf Zeppelin”. German Naval Aviation commander Capt. Broder Nielsen described the JSM as a viable armament choice for the aircraft, while no public procurement decision or budget line has been announced.

The move would help restore a long-range maritime strike capability Germany lost when Tornado aircraft transferred to the Luftwaffe more than 20 years ago. Germany already has JSM orders tied to its F-35 programme, but integration on the P-8A remains only under consideration.

The Poseidon is currently cleared to carry the AGM-84 Harpoon, while the larger LRASM is being introduced on U.S. and Australian P-8A fleets. Any German adoption of the JSM would add another stand-off option for the Marineflieger, though the available evidence points to an exploratory step rather than a confirmed programme decision.
