Saab to upgrade Bulgarian air traffic control systems

Saab has signed an agreement with Bulgaria’s air navigation services provider BULATSA to upgrade air traffic control systems at Sofia, Varna and Burgas airports. The project centres on Saab’s Integrated Air Traffic Control Suite, with an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System planned for Sofia Airport, alongside a modernised human-machine interface and tools designed to support European Union Common Project One requirements.

The contract extends Saab’s air traffic management presence in Europe and targets operational improvements across Bulgaria’s three main airports. BULATSA manages the country’s air navigation services, and the upgrade is aimed at improving safety, efficiency and surface movement management at the airports handling the bulk of the country’s commercial traffic.

No financial terms were disclosed. The reported scope covers both airport and en-route operations support, with the Sofia surface movement system providing the most specific technical element in the deal.
