BER airport assault investigated as attempted homicide after employee attack

Berlin Brandenburg Airport is under scrutiny after prosecutors upgraded an attack on a 48-year-old airport employee to attempted homicide. A 22-year-old passenger from Estonia is accused of violently assaulting the worker at a departure gate on 6 September after being refused boarding, and is now in custody.

The case was initially handled as dangerous bodily harm before investigators reassessed the evidence and sought an arrest warrant on the more serious charge. The injured employee has since been discharged from hospital, while reports described facial fractures and other serious injuries.

The incident has drawn attention to staff safety and escalation procedures at BER, the capital’s main airport in Schönefeld near Berlin. Airport management described the level of violence as deeply shocking, and the case remains with Brandenburg police and the Cottbus prosecutor’s office.
