Catania-Fontanarossa Airport resumed normal flight operations on Tuesday evening after volcanic ash from Mount Etna forced a suspension of arrivals and departures. SAC, which manages the Sicilian airport, restored services with immediate effect at around 19:00 local time once the aviation alert level was lowered and the affected airspace sectors reopened.
The restart followed more than a day of disruption, with ash and shifting wind conditions keeping parts of the airspace unsafe. The closure centred on sectors C1 and B3, and several flights were cancelled or diverted during the interruption. Passenger operations began returning gradually, but travellers were still advised to check flight status with their airlines as aircraft and crew rotations normalised.
