Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 diverted after passenger gives birth onboard

Vietnam Airlines diverted a Boeing 787 operating flight VN38 after a passenger went into premature labour and gave birth during the journey from Copenhagen to Ho Chi Minh City. The baby was delivered onboard after about six to seven minutes, with the aircraft continuing on to Tan Son Nhat after a medical stop in Yangon, Myanmar.

The incident unfolded around 10 hours into the flight, with just over two hours still remaining. Five passengers with medical backgrounds and the cabin crew assisted the mother during the delivery. The newborn weighed about 1.3 kg, underlining the seriousness of the emergency and the need for specialist treatment.

The aircraft diverted to Yangon so the mother and baby could receive hospital care. After refuelling and completing the medical response, the flight resumed and later landed safely in Ho Chi Minh City.
