Amazon Air Boeing 767-300F overruns Miami runway, strikes van carrying cleaning staff

An Amazon Air Boeing 767-300F operating as 21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport on 6 September and struck a van carrying airline cleaning staff, killing five people and injuring five others. The cargo flight had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and came to rest beyond the runway after hitting airport equipment and additional vehicles near the perimeter.

The van belonged to Professional Ocean Service Corporation and carried seven people. Three of the injured were reported in critical condition. Airport operations were disrupted after the accident, which prompted an emergency response and a formal investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The aircraft was carrying Amazon freight under the Prime Air programme, with 21 Air operating the flight on Amazon’s behalf. Early reporting has focused on the sequence of the overrun, the ground casualties and the operator details, while the cause has not yet been established.
