Finnish authorities are investigating an unknown fixed-wing drone found near Porvoo on the southern coast east of Helsinki after a passerby discovered the aircraft on Tuesday. The Border Guard and police have opened an inquiry into the object, which officials are treating as a possible territorial violation. Initial checks found no explosives, and the drone appears to have been used for mapping or surveying.
The aircraft was described as a fixed-wing, aircraft-type drone with a wingspan of several metres. Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen said authorities do not yet know where it came from and are not ruling out any possibility.
The case adds to security concerns around drones in Finland and across the Baltic region since Russia’s war against Ukraine, where unidentified aerial activity has prompted heightened vigilance by border and defence authorities. The exact origin, operator and flight path of the drone remain unconfirmed.
