Poland has taken delivery of its first three F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from the United States, a significant step in modernizing the country’s air force and reinforcing NATO’s deterrence posture on the alliance’s eastern flank. The aircraft arrived at the 32nd Tactical Air Base in Łask on May 22, following a 2020 contract under which Warsaw is acquiring 32 F-35A jets along with associated training and logistics support.
The introduction of the fifth-generation fighters brings low-observable stealth, advanced sensor fusion and enhanced electronic warfare capabilities into Polish service. According to defense officials, the F-35A will substantially improve Poland’s ability to detect, track and engage airborne and surface threats at long ranges while operating in heavily defended airspace. The aircraft are expected to play key roles in air superiority, precision strike and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
The delivery comes amid heightened regional security concerns following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and continued tensions along NATO’s eastern borders. The new jets will operate alongside existing Polish F-16s and other allied aircraft regularly deployed to the country, improving interoperability within NATO air operations and contributing to the alliance’s integrated air and missile defense architecture in the region.
