Lufthansa and Fraport have inaugurated a redesigned departure facility at Gate A16 in Terminal 1 of Frankfurt Airport, creating a live test environment for future gate concepts. The partners will assess whether mobile assistance, digital passenger information and a more flexible waiting area can make boarding faster and smoother while improving service and operational efficiency at Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub.
Francesco Sciortino, Lufthansa Airlines board member and Frankfurt hub manager, and Dietmar Focke, Fraport’s chief operating officer, formally opened the facility on Wednesday. The gate features lounge-style seating, sofas, selected artwork and working cubes intended to provide quieter, more private areas for passengers.
Large wall monitors and 360-degree displays show departure times, boarding status, hand-baggage information and live gate changes. QR codes provide access to digital self-services and other real-time information.
The operating model also removes the conventional fixed boarding counter as the main point of assistance. Staff circulate through the gate with tablets and a unified interface, enabling them to answer questions, arrange seat reservations, process upgrades and rebookings, and manage automated announcements.
Lufthansa and Fraport will use the test environment to identify which services passengers value before considering their introduction at other gates or terminal areas. No timetable for a wider rollout has been announced.
