Lockheed Martin demonstrated the in-flight redirection of a Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System rocket during a US Army test at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Launched from a HIMARS, the rocket was reassigned or redirected after launch and destroyed a moving target, demonstrating a capability intended to make precision fires more responsive to changing battlefield conditions.
The demonstration used Lockheed Martin’s Strigo data link and RIG-360 guidance system to update target information during flight. The approach is designed to provide new engagement data without fundamentally redesigning the existing GMLRS rocket, potentially reducing reliance on fixed coordinates established before launch.
Lockheed Martin funded the work internally. The company’s technology could eventually be applied to other precision munitions, including Extended-Range GMLRS and the Precision Strike Missile, although the test did not establish that those systems have demonstrated the same capability. Details including the rocket variant, target type, engagement range, flight distance, accuracy and participating Army unit were not disclosed.
