Saab picks CAE, IMP and Magellan as Canadian Gripen E partners

Saab has selected CAE, IMP Aerospace & Defence and Magellan Aerospace as its principal Canadian industrial partners for the Gripen E, subject to the Government of Canada choosing the fighter. The proposed programme would establish Canadian production, final assembly, training and sustainment capabilities, with activities involving companies in Montreal, Halifax and Mississauga.

Saab has signed a teaming agreement with Halifax-based IMP to establish a Canadian Gripen final-assembly line. IMP would also produce electrical assemblies and provide in-service support for the aircraft. A separate memorandum of understanding with Magellan Aerospace covers local manufacturing of advanced aerostructures, composite structures and structural assemblies.

Montreal-based CAE’s planned contribution builds on an earlier memorandum of understanding signed with Saab in July 2026. It would provide fighter-pilot and technician training, mission-systems engineering, and support and sustainment capabilities in Canada.

The arrangements are intended to create an in-country industrial ecosystem covering production, delivery, training and long-term support, while potentially expanding Canadian aerospace and defence capabilities. They do not represent a Gripen order or an active production programme: Canada has not selected the aircraft, and Saab has disclosed no investment value, employment total, production volume, assembly start date or delivery schedule.
