Saab plans Canadian Gripen production network

Saab plans to establish a Canadian industrial network for Gripen E production, final assembly, training and long-term support if Ottawa selects the fighter. The proposed network would involve IMP Aerospace and Defence, Magellan Aerospace and CAE, creating domestic capabilities that extend from manufacturing and maintenance to further development of military-aviation technologies.

A teaming agreement with IMP covers a Canadian Gripen final-assembly line, electrical-assembly production and in-service support for the future fleet. Saab has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Magellan for local production of advanced aerostructures, composite structures and structural assemblies.

CAE’s existing memorandum covers fighter-pilot and technician training, mission-systems engineering, and support and sustainment capabilities in Canada. Saab is also engaging with other Canadian companies, universities and research organisations as it develops the proposed national network and potential links to the wider Gripen supply chain.

The plan remains conditional on a Canadian decision to acquire the Gripen E. Saab has not disclosed a final-assembly location, investment value, employment figure, production start date or delivery schedule. No aircraft order or production contract has been awarded.
