Wizz Air plans Ohrid base as North Macedonia eyes wider route growth

Wizz Air is preparing to open a base at Ohrid Airport in North Macedonia, with one aircraft expected to be stationed there and new routes likely to follow. The move would extend the carrier’s footprint beyond Skopje and strengthen its presence at the country’s secondary airport, where it has operated since 2015. Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikoloski has indicated that the base is expected, although the plan has not yet been formally confirmed by the airline.

The development fits Wizz Air’s broader regional strategy in North Macedonia, where it already has seven aircraft based at Skopje. A unit at Ohrid would give the airline additional capacity to build point-to-point traffic from the western part of the country and support seasonal or winter-schedule expansion.

Ohrid Airport has become a growing part of Wizz Air’s network in North Macedonia, but the latest move remains at the planning stage. The absence of a direct confirmation from the carrier means the base should still be treated as prospective rather than final.
