Vietjet, CFM assess Vietnam LEAP engine MRO capability

Vietjet and CFM International have signed a letter of intent to study the feasibility of developing maintenance, repair and overhaul capability for CFM LEAP engines in Vietnam. The move, disclosed after the companies formalised the agreement during the official visit of Vietnamese leaders to France, could lay the groundwork for local support for engines used on Vietjet’s expanding fleet.

Under the proposed arrangement, CFM will advise Vietjet on engine maintenance demand, technical capability, infrastructure, equipment, manpower and other requirements linked to a potential MRO solution. The work remains at an assessment stage, with no opening date, investment figure or implementation schedule confirmed.

The discussion fits Vietjet’s wider fleet strategy, including its 200-strong Boeing 737-8 commitment powered by LEAP-1B engines. Vietnamese coverage said a future domestic LEAP MRO base could support high-tech aviation industry development, help train engineers to international standards and strengthen the country’s position in the global aerospace value chain.
