US sanctions 27 Iranian airlines and details Boeing 777 diversion to Mahan Air

The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on 36 targets in Iran’s aviation sector, including 27 Iranian airlines, in a sweeping action aimed at restricting the industry’s use for moving weapons, personnel and illicit cargo. The package also targets the transfer of three Boeing 777 aircraft that reached Mahan Air in the summer through intermediaries in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Türkiye.

Treasury identified the 27 carriers as the remaining active airlines in Iran and linked the wider network to support services for Mahan Air, which remains under U.S. restrictions. The aircraft were described as coming from a retired fleet and were routed through third-country entities before being taken on by the airline.

The action also suspends three Iran-related aviation authorisations, including permissions tied to overflights and to non-U.S. airlines operating U.S.-origin or U.S.-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran. Alongside the airlines, the sanctions extend to UAE-based ECT Aviation Support LLC, Türkiye-based Sky Phoenix Hava Yollari Tasimaciligi Ticaret Limited Sirketi and other service providers involved in the aircraft transfers.
