Frankfurt health authorities have confirmed a third death linked to a malaria cluster in the Schwanheim district near Frankfurt Airport. The latest fatality involved a person who had not travelled to a malaria-endemic region and had no connection to airport work, deepening concerns about unusual local transmission around Germany’s busiest aviation hub.
The Frankfurt public health department and Universitätsmedizin Frankfurt are investigating whether the cases stem from an imported mosquito, a scenario that would be highly unusual for the region. Two earlier deaths in the summer were tied to malaria cases among airport employees, and the new Schwanheim case raises the total number of fatalities in the cluster to three.
Authorities have not yet established a direct link between the Schwanheim infections and the earlier airport-worker cases. Laboratory work is continuing to determine whether the patients share a common source, while officials have urged doctors to consider malaria in patients with unexplained fever even when no travel history points to an endemic area. No additional cases had been reported since the start of the week, and a hotline has been set up for public enquiries.
