Swedavia ends planning for new pier at Stockholm Arlanda

Swedavia’s board has ended planning and design work for a proposed new pier at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, before any final investment decision. The Swedish airport operator reviewed future capacity needs, changing passenger behaviour, airline requirements, alternative solutions and project costs. It will redirect investment to other projects it considers quicker to implement. The decision is expected to trigger a write-down of about SEK 1.2 billion, with no cash-flow impact or change to 2027 landing and passenger charges.

Most of the uncapitalised costs relate to work carried out before the COVID-19 pandemic. The write-down will reduce Swedavia’s operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company links lower future capital requirements to keeping airport charges competitive, but has not identified which investments will be brought forward or given their timetable.

The decision ends project development work undertaken ahead of a possible investment decision; it does not cancel a pier that had already received construction approval. Swedavia has not quantified how the change will affect Arlanda’s future capacity.
