Stuttgart Airport has secured a €44 million loan from the European Investment Bank to fund decarbonisation and infrastructure modernisation at its Baden-Württemberg hub. The financing forms part of an investment programme worth up to €111 million, covering electric ground-handling equipment, airport facilities and systems designed to reduce aircraft emissions while parked. The measures are expected to cut CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,500 tonnes a year.
The programme includes around 100 electric ground-handling vehicles, associated charging infrastructure and a dedicated maintenance workshop. Stuttgart Airport also plans to build a new fire station as part of the infrastructure works.
Preconditioned-air systems will supply parked aircraft with heated or cooled air, removing the need to run their auxiliary power units for ground-based climate control. The wider project also encompasses upgrades to airport infrastructure supporting the transition to zero-emission ground operations.
The EIB identifies the financing as part of Stuttgart Airport’s STRzero programme, which targets an 85% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2040. The airport has not disclosed the loan’s term, interest rate or a timetable for implementing the individual measures.
