Southwest links new lounges to premium push and Chase card

Southwest Airlines is positioning its first airport lounges as part of a broader premium strategy aimed at attracting higher-spend customers and deepening loyalty. Chief financial officer Tom Doxey tied the network to a forthcoming premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card issued by Chase, which is expected to give access to the lounges.

The carrier plans initial lounge openings in Austin, Baltimore, Nashville and Honolulu, with construction already under way at some sites and a launch expected in late 2027. Southwest also intends to add at least seven more locations, creating a wider network over time. The lounges sit alongside other premium initiatives, including assigned seating and extra-legroom products, as Southwest moves beyond its traditional no-frills image.

Doxey framed the plan as a way to reach higher-FICO, top-of-wallet cardholders and to give the loyalty programme a more aspirational profile. The lounges are intended to appeal not only to corporate travellers but to broader premium demand, as major US airlines increasingly use ground experience and card partnerships to monetise loyalty.
