Royal Schiphol Group has proposed increasing its stake in Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) from 40% to 80%, with the Province of Limburg retaining 20%. The proposed transfer, announced on 5 November, requires approval from Limburg’s Provincial Council and final agreements between the parties. If approved, Schiphol would become the airport’s majority shareholder and take greater responsibility for its development.
MAA handled about 41,600 tonnes of cargo and 159,000 passengers in 2025. Schiphol describes it as the Netherlands’ second-largest cargo airport, specialising in vulnerable and time-sensitive freight, including flowers and pharmaceuticals. The proposal does not specify a purchase price, investment commitment or approval timetable.
Maastricht is also expected to receive some traffic displaced by Eindhoven Airport’s temporary closure in 2027. The flights scheduled to move include services to Alicante, Málaga, Faro, Crete, Rhodes and Tenerife. Under the proposed arrangement, Limburg would remain a minority shareholder with a role in regional and public-interest matters. The parties plan to develop the proposal and settle further terms.
