Air India is considering increasing its order for wide-body aircraft as it seeks to expand international flying and regain overseas market share. Chief executive and managing director Tewolde Gebremariam outlined the intention at the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 conference in New Delhi, without specifying a quantity or timetable. The potential purchase is not a confirmed order; the Tata Group-owned carrier is also reviewing its network and costs as it works to return to profitability.
Air India has 61 wide-body aircraft in its fleet and existing orders for nearly 70 more, according to the conference report. No aircraft type or manufacturer has been identified for any additional order. The airline operates Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s and 777s.
Gebremariam, who took charge in October, is seeking to rebalance the international network and improve efficiency. Bengaluru is under consideration as a third hub alongside Delhi and Mumbai. Profitability and cost reduction remain priorities for the loss-making airline.
