Salzburg Airport has begun demolishing Hangar 2, launching the first visible stage of a EUR 105 million terminal redevelopment that will run through 2033. The work clears space for a reconfigured passenger area at the Austrian airport, with the first major construction phase for the new departures terminal due to start in April 2027.
The 1966-built hangar is being removed first, after which passenger traffic will move into Terminal 2 while the former main building is rebuilt. The project is designed to create a future two-terminal layout with separated arrival and departure functions, allowing Salzburg Airport to keep operating during construction while meeting modern border and security requirements.
Local reporting on Tuesday showed demolition work under way with a 40-ton excavator. Bettina Ganghofer, the airport’s managing director, has linked the redevelopment to one of the airport’s biggest infrastructure projects in years.
The budget remains set at EUR 105 million, with EUR 70 million financed by the airport and the balance coming from public owners. If the timetable holds, the new departures building is expected to open around 2030 before the wider programme concludes in 2033.
