Saab pushes AI-augmented Gripen pilot training with Project Skynapse

Saab is advancing Gripen pilot training with Project Skynapse, an AI-augmented simulator-based concept designed to make learning more interactive and adaptable. The initiative is linked to Saab’s flight test centre in Linköping, Sweden, and forms part of the company’s broader effort to modernise training around the Gripen fighter programme.

The project moves beyond conventional instructor-led methods by placing more emphasis on software-driven simulation and repeatable digital learning. That approach is intended to improve training efficiency and readiness for Gripen operators, while also reflecting Saab’s wider focus on pairing aircraft development with workforce and training innovation.

Project Skynapse sits within Saab’s latest Gripen activity, including the recent first flight of the Gripen F two-seat variant from Linköping. The training concept highlights how fighter programmes are increasingly using simulation and AI tools not only for pilot preparation, but also to support faster conversion and more flexible mission readiness.
