Russian drone may have targeted train carrying Boris Johnson, officials say

A Russian drone struck a passenger train near the Ukraine-Poland border on Sunday shortly after a diplomatic service carrying Boris Johnson and other senior European figures passed through the same route. Ukrainian rail authorities said the train had left Yahodyn station early because of drone-threat precautions, while no casualties were reported in the strike about 2 km from Polish territory.

The train line is used by foreign delegations returning from Kyiv, and the timings of services have been adjusted in real time because of repeated Russian strike threats. Officials in Ukraine said it was quite likely the drone could have been aimed at the diplomatic train, although the train that was hit had already been evacuated. The Russian defence ministry said it was targeting railway infrastructure in western Ukraine used for military cargo, but Ukrainian and Polish authorities treated the incident as a serious threat close to NATO territory.

Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt and former CIA director David Petraeus were also linked to the journey, which followed a security conference in Kyiv. The drone strike damaged rail infrastructure near Yahodyn station in western Ukraine, underscoring the exposure of civilian transport links near the border even when passengers are moved out before impact.
