Qantas will launch the first scheduled non-stop commercial service between Sydney and New York in mid-2028, using specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. Tickets are due to go on sale in August 2027, and the flight is expected to take about 18 hours, cutting more than three hours from today’s one-stop journey via Auckland.
The route is the second confirmed Project Sunrise service after Sydney–London, which is due to begin in October 2027. Qantas has framed the New York service as the first non-stop commercial link between Australia’s largest city and the US east coast, with Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and New York JFK as the endpoints.
The A350-1000ULR fleet will feature an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank and up to 22 hours of endurance, allowing ultra-long-haul operation on the sector. Qantas has said the aircraft will have 238 seats across four cabins, with the first delivery expected in 2027. Frequency, fares and final operating details have not yet been disclosed.
