Federal investigators are examining whether the crew of Amazon Air Flight 7598 should have aborted its landing before the Boeing 767 overran a runway at Miami International Airport and killed five people on the ground. The aircraft, operated by 21 Air for Amazon Air, came in from San Juan, Puerto Rico and overran runway 30 on Sunday before striking vehicles outside the runway perimeter.
The National Transportation Safety Board, led by chair Jennifer Homendy, has recovered the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder and is documenting the scene as part of its early inquiry. Investigators are focusing on the touchdown point, braking performance, weather, air traffic control communications and runway safety systems, including whether an arresting system could have lessened the damage.
Video reviewed by media showed the jet appearing to float well down the runway before touchdown, raising questions over whether the crew had enough stopping margin to continue the approach safely. The aircraft was on its third flight of the day when it crashed, and reports indicate two crew members were aboard. The final cause remains unknown.
