NTSB chair criticises delay on KDCA midair safety bill

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy has criticised Congress for failing to advance legislation tied to the January 2025 midair collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, urging lawmakers to act on safety recommendations connected to the fatal KDCA accident. Speaking at the Air Line Pilots Association’s 70th Air Safety Forum, she voiced disappointment that no bill had yet passed to implement the measures and warned against reaching the second anniversary of the tragedy with no action taken.

The collision prompted the NTSB to issue 50 recommendations a year after the accident, including steps aimed at reducing collision risk and strengthening aviation safety oversight. Homendy also pointed to the wider regulatory backlog facing the agency, saying the NTSB has 235 open recommendations to the FAA, with 40% classified as open-unacceptable. The remarks highlighted continuing pressure on Congress and regulators to move beyond the KDCA case and close long-running safety gaps.
