Munich Airport handled 144,234 takeoffs and landings from January to June 2026, down 8.2% year on year, while passenger numbers slipped 4.2% to 18.9 million. Cargo and mail traffic moved in the opposite direction, rising 4.7% to 168,358 tonnes, highlighting a mixed first half for Flughafen München’s core hub operations.
The Bavarian gateway underperformed both the German market and the wider European aviation sector over the period, even though traffic across Europe increased. Industry conditions remained uneven, with headwinds including the Iran war and elevated jet fuel prices weighing on demand and airline operations. Munich accounted for about 83.4% of all flight movements and 83.1% of all passengers in Bavaria’s airport system during the six-month period, underlining its dominance in the state’s air transport market.
