Montenegro plans accelerated upgrades for Podgorica and Tivat airports

Montenegro’s government has set out an accelerated development plan for Podgorica Airport and Tivat Airport, with urgent measures due before next summer and a longer-term master plan to follow. The programme targets capacity constraints at the country’s two main gateways as passenger traffic and route growth have pushed both airports to their limits, with upgrades covering terminal space, aprons, runways and, at Podgorica, future handling of wide-body aircraft.

An interinstitutional coordination body chaired by Prime Minister Milojko Spajić will bring together ministries and Airports of Montenegro to clear administrative, planning, property, legal and financial obstacles. For Podgorica, immediate priorities include a new terminal, apron expansion, runway reconstruction and extension, plus preparations for wide-body operations in the longer term. Tivat’s plan calls for a new terminal, a new apron and taxiway, and a full runway reconstruction.

The government also wants a 10-year master plan drawn up with an international specialist partner to set the next steps for both airports. Local reporting later confirmed the same core decision and indicated that some temporary or prefabricated improvements could be ready by next season, although no investment figure, construction timetable or financing model has been disclosed.
