Japan Airlines buys first CORSIA-eligible CO2 removal credits from Climeworks

Japan Airlines has signed a purchase agreement with Climeworks Solutions for what the companies describe as the world’s first CORSIA-eligible CO2 removal credit deal. The portfolio includes credits from multiple durable removal methods as well as direct air capture, and the arrangement is intended to support JAL’s carbon strategy and compliance efforts under ICAO’s aviation offsetting scheme.

The Tokyo-based carrier has already used CORSIA-eligible credits in its compliance programme, including large-scale retirements in fiscal 2025. This new contract extends that approach into carbon dioxide removals, a segment that is drawing growing attention as airlines seek compliance-grade supply for the first phase of CORSIA.

Climeworks is based in the Zurich area of Switzerland. The companies did not disclose the volume, value or delivery schedule of the credits, and the “world first” claim reflects their own characterisation of the transaction.
