Indonesia kept six airports closed on 7 September as volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau continued to disrupt operations around Jakarta and western parts of the country. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the country’s main international gateway, was among the affected hubs, alongside Halim Perdanakusuma, Radin Inten II, Husein Sastranegara, Budiarto and Pondok Cabe.
The closures followed earlier wider restrictions that had temporarily affected eight airports. Flight disruption remained significant, with about 1,558 flights delayed or cancelled and roughly 170,000 passengers affected, as ash forced repeated extensions to operational shutdowns for safety reasons. The situation kept pressure on airport and air navigation authorities as they monitored eruptive activity from the volcano.
Soekarno-Hatta, which handles much of Indonesia’s international traffic, was repeatedly extended as ash conditions remained unstable. The disruption also spread beyond Jakarta’s air hub to airports in Banten, Lampung and West Java, underlining the wider operational impact on domestic and regional connectivity.
