Icelandair aircraft mechanics have voted to begin an indefinite strike from 23 September after wage talks broke down, raising the risk of major disruption to the carrier’s schedule. The action involves members of Flugvirkjafélag Íslands and could affect Icelandair’s flight operations in Iceland, with the airline preparing for possible passenger rebooking and schedule changes.
The dispute has been running since late 2025 and was referred to the State Mediator in February after bargaining failed to produce a new agreement. The union has now formally authorised industrial action after the ballot result was confirmed, and notified Icelandair, the mediator and the Confederation of Icelandic Enterprise.
Icelandair has warned that the strike could significantly affect its operation, but has not quantified any financial impact. The carrier has also maintained that its offer was aligned with wider market settlements, while the union argues its members have lacked a new contract since the start of the year and turned to the vote as a last resort. No late settlement has been confirmed.
