Grupo Oesía will develop two critical subsystems for QKD-GEO, the first European geostationary quantum key distribution system. The Spanish technology group has been selected to supply the photon source and the control electronics for the quantum random number generator in space, supporting a satellite programme aimed at secure key exchange from orbit.
The work links Grupo Oesía with Thales Alenia Space and the wider QKD-GEO team as Europe pushes ahead with sovereign quantum communications capabilities. The system includes a quantum key distribution payload on a geostationary satellite, with the company responsible for technology central to generating and controlling the quantum states used to transmit keys.
Grupo Oesía had already completed an earlier technical step by delivering advanced engineering models to Thales Alenia Space at the end of June. The project strengthens the company’s position in photonics, quantum technologies and secure communications, while adding industrial support to Europe’s space-security ambitions.
