Germany has formally blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, after investigators linked the device and surrounding evidence to Russian hybrid operations. The incident, which took place in early August, involved an explosives-laden drone near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at the eastern German freight hub, a key logistics point for air cargo and Ukraine-related operations.
Berlin responded with retaliatory measures that include closing the Russian consulate general in Bonn and ending the agreement for the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul tied the case to a broader pattern of Russian hybrid activity in Europe, while EU officials echoed the attribution. Russia rejected the allegations as baseless.
The case has sharpened concern over drone threats to cargo airports and other sensitive aviation infrastructure. The drone was found in a secure area near the south runway, and the detonator failed, preventing a larger explosion. Investigators have not publicly disclosed the full forensic chain, but the public attribution marks a clear shift from suspicion to an official German conclusion.
